Kicked off an around the world cruise because of WhatsApp
Two women have been removed from a cruise before its departure after expressing dissatisfaction with delays and changes in a private WhatsApp group.
Jenny Phenix, who had retired from her job, rented out her Florida apartment and invested over US$18,600 in embarking on a full-time cruise adventure, was set to join Villa Vie’s Odyssey ship. The vessel was scheduled to voyage around the world, making stops at 425 destinations throughout a three-and-a-half-year journey.
However, the maiden voyage from the UK in May faced setbacks due to issues with the ship's rudder stocks and certifications, leading to a four-month delay. While other travelers eagerly awaited the departure date, Phenix and fellow traveler Bonny Kelter had their contracts terminated after voicing concerns about ongoing delays and changes in amenities within a private WhatsApp group.
Following variances in the departure date from May 15 to later dates, and alterations to room arrangements, Phenix felt dissatisfied with the voyage plans. She also expressed disappointment over the cancellation of the ship's stop in Miami, where she intended to collect her belongings. After Phenix and Kelter threatened to involve the media unless their demands were met, the company's CEO decided to cancel their contracts.
Despite more than a dozen residents petitioning for the women to be given another chance, the decision remained unchanged. Although Villa Vie refunded Phenix, part of her refund was reportedly pending, leaving her short of a few thousand dollars.
Phenix has since opted to join Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas for the final leg of its nine-month world cruise before temporarily residing with her daughter and planning her next steps. Meanwhile, other residents are still waiting to embark on their sailing adventure while facing uncertainties about accommodations in the UK after Villa Vie ceased covering their hotel expenses.
